We don't need Bitcoin, they do

I started listening to Kissinger's On China. I'm enjoying his writing style and learning a bunch.

Bitcoin will blossom where it is needed ๐Ÿงก

Bitcoin is as unstoppable as BitTorrent. As long as any two "peers" run a node, it will continue to exist. In addition to BitTorrent's resilience, however, Bitcoin incentivizes running nodes. Miners do not simply defy the status quo, they are rewarded for it.

In the West, in "developed" countries, in countries with large economies and comparatively efficient money transfers, Bitcoin has been recognized and adopted as an investment vehicle. The fast-settling and irrevocable nature of bitcoin's money transfers is taken for granted. These people do not need Bitcoin as a network (uppercase "b"). They play with bitcoin as a currency (lowercase "b") like they would play the stock market. For now.

Bitcoin is much more useful to other people in places where currency and money transfers aren't as efficient or trustworthy:

  • El Salvador now has 400 bitcoins to help achieve its goal of making it legal tender
  • In Afghanistan, women have been using it to emancipate (amazing article), and gain freedom.
  • Panama is getting inspired by El Salvador, drafting bitcoin recognition as well.
